Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, Lutheran Church – Hong Kong Synod – Mr & Mrs Lawrence Wong Lutheran Rehabilitation And Care Centre

The Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service Office was established in 1977.

As early as 1977, the Hong Kong Lutheran Society (formerly known as the Evangelical Road Virtue Society, established in 1949) had set the goal of serving the society. In 1968, with the cooperation of the Social Welfare Committee, Youth Ministries Committee and Special Ministries Committee and local churches, three social service units were used as the starting point for serving the society: namely, the blind in Wong Tai Sin Centre, Wong Tai Sin Youth Centre and Senior Citizen Centre. At that time, the three centers were operating in a dismal operation due to the small area, shortage of manpower, and poor church subsidies.

In 1977, the Hong Kong Lutheran Council, the Social Welfare Committee, the Youth Ministry Committee, the Special Ministries Committee, and the centers managed by individual churches formed a community service department and coordinated the work of the three service units. The Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service Office was also established at that time.

Today, the Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service has more than 50 service units, including head office, juvenile center, youth drug abuse counseling center, drug rehabilitation center, comprehensive service center, community development plan, community center, elderly center, Elderly Day Care Centers, Care and Attention Homes, Kindergartens, Social and Recreation Centers for People with Disabilities, Activity Centers, Dormitories for People with Intellectual Disabilities, Supported Employment and Training Services for People with Disabilities, Community Support Centers for People with Disabilities, Comprehensive Employment Assistance Program and School-based Services, School social work services, family life education services and foster care services. In recent years, in line with the policies of the Social Services Department, the employment support program has been implemented to assist the disabled with vocational training, while the youth service has implemented youth training and youth employment counseling. The scope covers Hong Kong, Kowloon, New Territories and Cheung Chau, dedicated to serving the society and witnessing the gospel of Christ.

Mr & Mrs Lawrence Wong Lutheran Rehabilitation and Care Centre was set up to provide appropriate treatment and training for elderly people with cognitive impairments and to provide support and assistance to their families. Through various therapeutic activities, the Centre provides continuous and systematic training to help reduce the decline of the elderly.
